President Washington has announced that Mason is running a $35M deficit for FY24. We are hearing from all over campus that colleges and schools have been asked to “chill” faculty hiring and cut their budgets. These decisions are too important to leave to administrators. So we’re calling an all-faculty Zoom meeting for Friday, October 20 at 10am. Come learn about cuts to other units and share about cuts made to yours. Let’s map the financial landscape at Mason and plan our next steps. Register here for the Zoom link!

In February 2023, GMU-AAUP held an urgent members and friends meeting to discuss how our chapter might respond to the recent attacks on higher education in Florida. We also discussed how we might strengthen our organizing and build more power by sharing our connections to other organizations and building strong connections to our colleagues. Click here for the powerpoint slides we shared during the meeting.

In October 2022, GMU-AAUP and the Virginia Conference of the American Association of University Professors co-sponsored a “Faculty, Know Your Rights” Webinar featuring panelists from the AAUP, ACLU, and FIRE. These panelists examined emerging threats to the academic freedom of faculty and grad students (both in the legislature or on campus), and they discussed how we can organize as faculty to fight state censorship and protect the quality of education at public universities. They also discussed the resources that are available should faculty find themselves targeted or censored by administrators and in need of legal aid.
